Picture Book Illustration: Abecedario Mazatleco Coloring Book
Client: Personal project
Context: A coloring book created during the pandemic, as a tribute to Mazatlán, my hometown. It walks through the alphabet using elements typical of the city, along with a Mazatlán slang dictionary.
My role: Full illustration of the book, including the conceptual work of deciding which element would represent each letter of the alphabet, and sourcing the printing supplier.
The challenge: Finding a truly representative element of Mazatlán’s culture, food, or landscape for each letter of the alphabet, and translating it into a simple illustration suited for coloring.
Process: Research and selection of typical Mazatlán elements by letter, sketching and final line illustration, compiling the Mazatlán slang dictionary as supplementary content, and sourcing and coordinating the printing supplier.
Deliverables: Illustrations for the full alphabet and the Mazatlán slang dictionary.
Tools: Illustrator, Photoshop
Result: The book went viral and received media coverage across Sinaloa, including interviews and features. To date, it’s on its 3rd edition with over 3,000 copies sold.
